Foundations of philosophy

Intelligence

In this vocabulary, intelligence means organizing direction, rather than IQ.

The big idea

The word has a broader meaning here than everyday cleverness or education. Stephenson assigns intelligence a role in the relationship between force and matter. Universal and Innate describe different scopes within that framework.

An everyday illustration

A written recipe represents direction for an activity. It helps distinguish the organizing idea from the ingredients and the work of cooking.

An original illustration to help explain the idea, not a quotation or evidence of a biological mechanism.

In the author’s words

“The function of intelligence is to create force.”

Read it in context

Principle 8 states intelligence’s function very briefly. The surrounding principles provide its philosophical meaning; the word should not be read as a psychological test score.
